Burley Park is an important inner-city park, which sadly is in need of additional funds. The departure of Burley Phoenix Scouts group for the Hawksworth Wood Estate has allowed the Leeds City Council Parks Service to relocate into the former scout hut on Burley Road. This has produced some gradual, although very welcome improvements, but Parks staff lack the resources to attempt major maintenance work. The perimeter fence has been defaced by graffiti and the basketball courts need significant investment.
Nevertheless, the park is well used and plainly meets a significant need in an area that suffers from a chronic shortage of public open space. The immediate problem in this picture results from wind damage. Our problem is how to fix it when central government policies require £90 million cuts in the current financial year.
